It’s time for the EU to scrap the unanimity rule on treaty change
“But that would require treaty change.” Rather often, a good idea for making the EU more flexible is dismissed because the EU treaties can only be changed by unanimity, and reaching unanimity on anything important seems impossible just now. However, the current EU treaties are still an awkward halfway house; sooner or later we will need to change them again.
Once we finally manage, on the same go we should also make life easier for future generations: we should allow for the EU treaties to be changed through a qualified majority of member states.
