Federalists throwing down the gauntlet to Eurosceptics

Last weekend, JEF-Europe’s Federal Committee gathered in Budapest at the European Youth Centre of the Council of Europe. More than 60 representatives were present, over 10 resolutions were discussed and groundbreaking work was done for the next six months in the run-up to the European Congress in Helsinki, end of October.

Philippe Adriaenssens, President of JEF-Europe says: “Young Europeans from all corners of Europe met to demand an engaged EU response to the Arab uprisings, stronger coordination of economic governance as well as the reduction of roaming charges to abolish national borders in telecommunication. Whereas Eurosceptics limit themselves to complaining about the EU without proposing valid alternatives, federalists are insisting on deeper integration as the only solution to face transnational challenges!”

Also, the framework structure and consultation procedure for the organisation’s new Political Platform were agreed on, a common message for JEF’s Europe Day activities was adopted and JEF-Armenia was accepted as a candidate section. The organisation also took stock of its successful European Citizens’ Initiative (ECI) lobby action rendering the instrument more democratic and user-friendly and started brainstorming about the topics and process to draft an ECI proposal advancing the federalist cause.

Adriaenssens concludes: “JEF is warming up all its members to launch an ECI campaign on the first day of registrations, 1 April 2012, and I can already say to all Eurosceptics out there that it won’t be an April’s Fools’ joke. JEF will actively collaborate with the Union of European Federalists, the European Movement International and the Spinelli Group to fight back the forces of intergovernmentalism.”
