L’Europe doit retrouver l’esprit du CERN : dans l’intérêt de la science, de la prospérité et des valeurs européennes

Alors qu’à la fin de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, l’Europe est en ruines, la science européenne fait partie des innombrables victimes de la guerre et des années l’ayant précédée. Avant la guerre, l’Europe était le foyer de beaucoup parmi les plus brillants esprits scientifiques du monde. Puis, de nombreux scientifiques d’origine juive (à l’image d’Albert Einstein, parmi beaucoup d’autres) durent fuir aux Etats-Unis pour éviter la persécution, ou parce qu’ils s’opposaient au régime nazi et à sa politique extérieure d’occupation. Le calme revint mais les scientifiques continuèrent d’émigrer en Amérique, dans la mesure où, au milieu de la reconstruction, les conditions matérielles pour développer la science en Europe étaient quasi inexistantes.
