11 November 2018 : An example of the “Europeanisation of national remembrance”
The 11th of November 2018 was marked by commemorations of the centenary of the end of the First World War. On this occasion, the French head of state, Emmanuel Macron, invited 80 heads of state and government from other countries that were involved in the war, whether at home or abroad. On the guest list was also a representative from the European Union : European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker. A largely unprecedented feature in the history of First World War commemoration services, it seems that we can now legitimately speak of a certain “Europeanisation of national remembrance”.
