'Taking the Next Step in the Federation of Europe'

The High level Group chaired by Felipe Gonzalez has released its report on the future of Europe : They support the idea of a EU-wide cross-border constituency, and they want political parties to nominate their candidates for Commission president : http://www.consilium.europa.eu/showFocus.aspx?id=1&focusId=473&lang=FR

« To this end, the EU should develop political rights. Firstly, by encouraging Member States to grant vot...ing rights in national elections to nationals of other Member States ; secondly, and by »Europeanising" European Parliament elections through the introduction of cross‑border lists.

The EU should also make elections more meaningful for citizens. European elections have until now failed to engage the interest of citizens. If this is to change, citizens must have more knowledge about EU policies ; above all they must be able to identify with European politicians. For future European parliamentary elections, the EU's political parties should present truly European programmes and choose candidates for the post of Commission president."

I fully support the « transnational constituency » proposal. http://www.europarl.europa.eu/sides/getDoc.do?pubRef=-//EP//NONSGML+COMPARL+PE-440.210+01+DOC+PDF+V0//EN&language=EN I think it should be the priority of all European democrates, of all those who want the EU to be really democratic, and I hope the EU will find a compromise before 2014. It might be necessary to find arrangements for one or two countries that would be reluctant to participate to this constituency. But the most important is that this constituency is in working order before 2014 !

But apart from this, is the campaign « Who's your candidate ? » still on the agenda ? I saw that the webpage isn't working anymore.

Will European political parties designate their candidates for Commission President before the next European elections in May 2014 ? Will they accept to let their activists designate them through presidential primaries, as it is already the case in many national parties in Europe ? Will we have the right to European presidential primaries in 2013-2014, or will European activists and media once more be kept aside ?
